Levelling a profession on Dofus: where to start

4 min read

Dofus has 19 professions, all of which one character can level up to 200. Gathering professions level by gathering and pay right away; crafting professions level by crafting and cost resources; smithmagic levels by applying runes. Start with a gathering profession: it funds the rest.

The three families of professions

Professions drive the Dofus economy: all gear comes out of a crafter’s workshop, all resources from a gatherer. One character can level every profession, but you progress faster by focusing on two or three.

FamilyProfessionsHow they level
GatheringFarmer, lumberjack, miner, fisherman, alchemist, hunterBy gathering resources
CraftingJeweller, tailor, shoemaker, smith, carver, artificer, handymanBy crafting items in a workshop
SmithmagicSix professions, one per item familyBy modifying items with runes

How a profession earns experience

In gathering, each resource you collect gives experience, and each level opens new, rarer and better-paid resources. Hunter is a special case: its meat drops from monsters, as long as you have a hunting weapon equipped (the first hunting knife is given in Incarnam, and a hunting rune can turn another weapon into one).

In crafting, you make items in your profession’s workshop. You can only craft items at or below your profession’s level. A recipe close to your level gives a lot; a recipe that is too low gives almost nothing. So you need to change recipes regularly.

In smithmagic, experience comes from runes applied to items. It is a world of its own, covered in our guide to smithmagic.

Levelling a gathering profession

It is the simplest and cheapest: all it takes is time. Here is a method that works for every gathering profession.

  1. 1Pick a profession that suits how you play: hunter if you fight a lot, farmer or alchemist for calm sessions.
  2. 2Gather resources of your level in quiet areas, where you will not have to queue.
  3. 3As soon as a new resource unlocks, switch to it: it gives more experience and sells better.
  4. 4Empty your inventory regularly at the bank or the marketplace so weight does not hold you back.
  5. 5Keep part of your harvest if you plan to level the crafting profession that uses it.

Levelling a crafting profession: what it costs

Levelling a crafting profession means making many items, often unsellable, to gain experience. The real cost is the resources. That is why players pair a gathering profession with a crafting one that consumes its resources: lumberjack and carver, or miner and smith, for example.

  1. 1At each tier, list the recipes of your level and work out the price of their resources at the marketplace.
  2. 2Choose those whose resources are plentiful and cheap on your server.
  3. 3Craft in batches, then sell what you can to offset the cost.
  4. 4Move to higher recipes as soon as the previous ones give less experience.

Watch out : Resource prices vary a lot between servers and from one week to the next. Check them before each tier: a recipe that was profitable yesterday can become ruinous if one resource soars.

Which profession to choose

No profession is profitable everywhere and forever. What pays is a profession whose products are in demand and in short supply on your server. Watch the marketplace: what sells high and fast points to unmet demand.

For a first profession, go for gathering. After that, our comparison of profitable professions covers the strengths and limits of each, and our guide to earning kamas puts professions alongside other income sources.

  • Handyman: dungeon keys sell well when they are scarce.
  • Carver: starts with wood, often cheaper than ore.
  • Jeweller, tailor, shoemaker: in high demand, but costly to level and very competitive.

When a profession pack saves time

A profession pack is a player supplying the resources or items needed to pass levels, for kamas. It saves hours of gathering, especially on the most expensive crafting tiers.

On KamasTrade, profession packs state the level range covered and what is supplied. Have both points confirmed in writing before ordering.

Tip : The best moment for a pack is the tier where resources become scarce on your server: that is where gathering would cost you the most time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum profession level in Dofus?

Level 200, for all gathering, crafting and smithmagic professions.

Can you have several professions in Dofus?

Yes. One character can level every profession. Most players level several, starting with a gathering profession that funds the others.

Which profession should I level first?

A gathering profession: hunter if you fight a lot, farmer or alchemist if you prefer gathering in peace. They pay from the first levels.

Why is my profession no longer gaining experience?

Because your recipes have become too low for your level. Switch to recipes closer to your profession level.

Which profession earns the most on Dofus?

The one whose products are scarce on your server, and that changes. Look at what sells high and fast at the marketplace: it is the best signal.

Is a profession pack risky?

Not for your account: you receive resources or items in game. Pay in instalments and have the contents confirmed in writing.
