Which Dofus professions to choose to earn kamas over time
5 min read
No profession is profitable everywhere and forever: what pays is a profession whose products are in demand and short in supply on your server. To start, an easy gathering profession funds the rest; a crafting profession that uses its resources comes next.

What makes a profession profitable
People often look for “the” most profitable profession. The real question is different: what sells well on your server, and what do few players supply? A profession known to be lucrative but practised by everyone sees its prices melt; an overlooked one can earn far more.
Four criteria make the difference over time, much more than any fixed ranking:
- Demand: are the products used in quests, recipes, dungeons? A useful product always sells.
- Competition: how many players, and bots, gather or craft the same thing?
- Entry cost: does levelling need lots of resources or kamas?
- Your playtime: a profession that needs long gathering routes fits short sessions poorly.
Gathering or crafting: two approaches
Gathering professions produce raw materials. Crafting professions turn them into equipment, keys or consumables. The two complement each other, but you do not approach them the same way.
| Gathering | Crafting | |
|---|---|---|
| Professions | Farmer, lumberjack, miner, fisherman, alchemist, hunter | Jeweller, tailor, shoemaker, smith, carver, artificer, handyman |
| Cost to level | Low: you gather | High: you use up resources |
| Income | Immediate, steady, modest | Higher, but depends on demand |
| Skill needed | Knowing your routes | Knowing the market and recipes |
| Best for | Beginners, limited playtime | Players with some capital |
Gathering professions: pros and cons
Every gathering profession earns from the first level. The differences lie in how you gather and how much competition there is for the resources.
| Profession | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Hunter | Meat drops while you fight, as you progress | Needs a weapon fitted with a hunting rune |
| Farmer | Easy to level, no fighting, cereals used by other professions | Low-value resources, crowded fields |
| Fisherman | Fish used as food, rare fish at every tier | Some luck involved, contested fishing spots |
| Alchemist | Scattered plants, so less farmed out; very useful recipes | Scattered harvesting: you cross many maps |
| Miner | Ores and alloys in high demand | Few gathering spots, heavily contested |
| Lumberjack | Rare high-level wood is sought after | Strong competition on the most useful trees |
Tip : Hunter almost levels itself if you already fight a lot: it is an excellent first profession, as long as you add the hunting rune to your weapon.
Crafting professions: where the margin is
A crafting profession is expensive to level: you craft lots of items, some of which will not resell. It becomes profitable when you make what is missing, not what everyone already makes.
A few lasting principles to keep in mind:
- The handyman crafts, among other things, dungeon keys from monster drops: a key missing from the marketplace sells fast.
- The carver starts with wood, often cheaper than ore, and faces little competition on some servers.
- The smith follows the same logic, but with pricier ores.
- Jewellers, tailors and shoemakers make widely worn gear, but levelling is costly and competition drags their prices down.
Smithmagic, a special case
The six smithmagic professions craft nothing: they modify existing items with runes. They can pay well, by selling improved items or working for other players, but they take method and a kamas reserve to absorb failures.
It is not a first profession. If it appeals to you, our smithmagic guide explains runes, the sink and the risks before you start.
Combinations that work
A character can level several professions. The most efficient setup pairs a profession that produces resources with one that consumes them: you stop paying market price for raw materials, and you sell the surplus.
| Combination | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Lumberjack + carver | The wood you gather feeds the carver’s crafts directly. |
| Miner + smith | Ores, expensive to buy, come from your own gathering. |
| Hunter + fisherman | Two food professions, one during fights, the other in peace. |
| Farmer + alchemist | Two gathering professions without combat, for relaxed sessions. |
| Crafter + smithmagic for the same item type | You craft and then improve your own items before selling them. |
Choosing on your server, in five steps
The best source is still your server’s market. Spend an evening observing it before you invest hours.
- 1List the professions that fit your play style: fighting, quiet gathering, crafting.
- 2On the marketplace, look at those professions’ resources and items: quantity on sale and unit price.
- 3Spot what is scarce or expensive without being absurd: that is poorly served demand.
- 4Start with the matching gathering profession, which funds the rest.
- 5Then add a crafting profession that uses your resources, and reassess regularly: the market changes.
Watch out : Be wary of rankings that promise earnings per hour: those figures depend on the server, competition and updates, and go out of date very quickly.
Saving time on levelling
The first levels of a gathering profession go fast; it is the crafting tiers that eat the most resources and time. Our guide to levelling a profession covers the progression, and the one on how to earn kamas puts professions alongside other income sources.
If you want to reach the levels where a profession becomes profitable sooner, a profession pack provides the resources or items needed to clear tiers, in exchange for kamas.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most profitable profession in Dofus?
There is no single answer: it depends on your server. A profession whose products are in demand and short in supply earns more than a famous but saturated one. Check the marketplace before choosing.
Which profession should I pick first in Dofus?
An easy gathering profession, such as hunter or farmer. It earns from the early levels and then funds a crafting profession.
Is gathering or crafting better in Dofus?
They complement each other. Gathering pays right away and costs little; crafting pays more but needs resources to level. Ideally, pair a gathering profession with a crafting one that uses its resources.
Can one character level several professions?
Yes. Most players level several, starting with a gathering profession that funds the others.
Why is my profession no longer making money?
Often because too many players supply the same products, or an update changed demand. Look at what is missing on your server and move towards those resources or items.
