Earning kamas in game: what actually pays
Buying kamas is not the only option, and it is not always the best return on your time. Here are the sources of income that survive updates. No hourly figures here: they would be wrong within six months.
Professions, the steadiest income
Harvesting and crafting remain the basis of the game’s economy: everything other players buy was produced by someone. A gathering profession levelled high needs little attention and pays steadily; a crafting profession pays more, but assumes you know what sells.
The classic trap is levelling a profession because it is reputed to be profitable. What is profitable depends on your server: where ten crafters make the same thing, the margin disappears. Look at your own server’s marketplace before choosing, not a ranking found elsewhere.
Trading at the marketplace
Buy low, sell high, produce nothing. It is the most profitable source per hour spent, and by far the most demanding: you have to know prices, watch their swings, and accept tying up kamas.
It also needs starting capital. That is why it rarely comes first: you begin by gathering, and move to trading once you have enough.
Dungeons, resources and breeding
Dungeons yield resources that crafters want, and are run in groups — which makes them enjoyable when you play with others, and thankless when you play alone.
Breeding dragoturkeys is a slow, undemanding income that requires patience and a paddock. It suits anyone who logs in regularly without wanting to spend their evenings on it.
- Gathering: steady, undemanding, modest yield.
- Crafting: depends on the server, worth checking before diving in.
- Dungeons: good in a group, thankless solo.
- Breeding: slow, but needs little active play time.
- Trading: the most profitable, the most demanding, capital required.
How long does a million take?
We will not give a figure, and nobody honest will: it depends on your server, your level, your professions and the moment. What you can do instead is compare.
Look at the price of a million on your server, then estimate what you earn in an hour of play. If an hour of play is worth less than the price shown, playing to earn those kamas costs you more than buying them — and the other way round. It is the only calculation worth doing, and it only works with your own numbers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most profitable profession in Dofus?
None is universally: profitability depends on what the other players on your server already produce. A profession few practise where you play will pay more than one reputed to be profitable but saturated. Your own server’s marketplace is the only reliable source to settle it.
Can you earn kamas without playing much?
Breeding and gathering fit limited play time best, because they need regularity rather than long sessions. Marketplace trading too, once the capital and the reference points are there.
Earn kamas in game or buy them?
It is a trade-off between your time and your money, and it has no general answer. Let us only recall that exchanging in-game currency for real money is forbidden by Ankama’s terms of use, and that the risk of a sanction is never zero.
