Getting started on Dofus: first steps without getting lost
5 min read
Dofus is a turn-based online role-playing game: every fight is played on a grid, like a game of chess with spells. To start well, pick a server you will stay on and a class you enjoy, then follow the Incarnam and Astrub quests: they guide you step by step. Everything else can wait.

Choosing your server: the decision that matters most
Your server is your world: your friends, your guild, your economy. Kamas and items from one server do not move to another. If friends already play, join their server; otherwise, pick an active one, where groups form quickly and the market is lively.
A new server starts from scratch: everyone moves at the same pace and prices are high at first. An older server has a fuller market, cheaper resources and experienced players ready to help. The price of kamas also differs from server to server: it is a good gauge of its economy.
Choosing a class without getting it wrong
Dofus 3 offers 19 classes, from the Feca to the Forgelance. Each mixes several roles: dealing damage, healing, protecting, moving enemies or allies, hindering opponents. None is bad for beginners. The right one is the one you will want to play for hundreds of hours.
If you are unsure, the Cra, Feca, Sacrier and Eniripsa have readable mechanics and forgive mistakes. No need to panic if you regret your pick: a free class change is offered in Incarnam, at the very start of the adventure. Our guide to choosing a class compares all 19 in detail.
Your first hours: Incarnam, then Astrub
The game takes you by the hand from character creation. No need to look elsewhere: the starting quests are the fastest way to earn experience, a first set of gear and a few kamas.
- 1Follow the tutorial: a guide teaches you turn-based combat and leads you to your first real fight.
- 2Do the quests of Incarnam, the starting island: there are about twenty-five, plus a first dungeon, Kardorim’s.
- 3Every character also has the key ring (Trousseau de clés), which opens almost every dungeon for free once a week.
- 4Once Incarnam is done, take the portal to Astrub, the first town on the continent.
- 5In Astrub, work through the quests of its different areas: they carry you through your first few dozen levels and introduce your first group dungeons.
| Stage | Area | What you do there |
|---|---|---|
| Very start | Incarnam | Tutorial, guided quests, Kardorim dungeon, first sets |
| Early levels | Astrub | About thirty quests, first dungeons |
| After that | Amakna and beyond | New regions, alignment quests, professions and tougher dungeons |
Tip : Incarnam and Astrub are available without a subscription: you can discover the game at your own pace before deciding whether to subscribe.
Understanding a fight
On your turn, you have action points (AP) to cast spells and movement points (MP) to move. Positioning matters as much as damage: stay out of range, block a corridor, keep close to an ally who heals.
Before charging in, click a monster: its characteristics and resistances appear. Hitting it in the element it resists least changes everything. If you play solo, a companion, an ally you control on its own turn, makes early fights far more comfortable.
Spending your characteristic points
At each level, your character receives 5 characteristic points. The four elemental characteristics (Strength for Earth, Intelligence for Fire, Chance for Water, Agility for Air) get more expensive in tiers. Vitality always costs one point, Wisdom three.
At first, put your points into a single element, the one of your main spells. A mistake is not permanent: a subscriber can reset their points outside combat. It is all explained in our guide to characteristics.
Progressing day to day
After Astrub, quests remain the steadiest way to progress. Add the Almanax, a daily quest at the Bibliotemple: every day, a different offering in exchange for experience, kamas and other rewards.
Dungeons are done in groups. Joining a guild speeds everything up: you find partners, advice, and often help with hard dungeons.
- Zaaps are teleporters: save each one you come across.
- Gear up with sets: wearing several items from the same set gives bonuses.
- Keep your resources at first: they will serve professions or sell later.
- Use your key ring every week: it is a free dungeon key.
Picking a profession and earning your first kamas
A gathering profession (farmer, lumberjack, miner, fisherman, alchemist, hunter) brings resources to sell from day one. A crafting profession (jeweller, tailor, shoemaker, smith, carver, artificer, handyman) lets you make your own gear and other players’. Many players combine a gathering profession with a crafting one that uses its resources.
Hunter is an excellent first pick if you fight a lot: meat drops during your fights. To go further, read our comparison of profitable professions and our methods to earn kamas.
Protecting your account
Turn on the two-factor authentication offered by Ankama and choose a password you use nowhere else. Be wary of links received in game promising free kamas or a gift: they are almost always theft attempts.
Watch out : Never give out your credentials, even to a friend or a player offering help. No honest service needs them: a dungeon run or powerleveling is done in a group, with your own character.
Frequently asked questions
Which class should I pick to start Dofus?
The one you like. All of them can progress solo and in a group. If you are unsure, the Cra, Feca, Sacrier and Eniripsa are known to be easy to pick up.
Is Dofus free to play?
The start of the game is available without a subscription, including Incarnam and Astrub. The rest of the world, and several comforts such as free characteristic resets, require a subscription.
Can I change class after starting?
Yes. A free change is offered in Incarnam, at the very start of the adventure. Later on, changing class requires a potion.
Can I change server later?
Ankama sometimes offers migrations, but kamas and items stay tied to the server. Better to pick from the start the one where you want to play for a long time.
How do I earn my first kamas on Dofus?
By selling gathered and dropped resources at the marketplace, doing the Almanax every day and levelling a gathering profession.
Should I do dungeons solo or in a group?
Usually in a group. A guild helps a lot. A companion can complete your team, and some players offer to take you through a dungeon for kamas.
